			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Many organizations these days are trying to do more with less. They update their technology systems and go lean with their manufacturing systems. But unfortunately, they neglect their <em>human systems</em>. Most people would never think of allowing their equipment to fall into disrepair due to negligence or lack of maintenance. Often those same people think that their human capital should magically remain problem-free, energetic and productive with absolutely no attention, support, or training.</p>
<p>Technical skills will only take you or your company so far. <p>Why  Wellness?</p>

<p>Here are a few statistics for those of you who are interested.  Obesity is on the rise – 66% of adults in this country are either overweight or obese. Obesity is epidemic. The price of obesity in a company with 1,000 employees has been estimated at $285,000 per year in increased absenteeism and medical costs. Additional statistics concur that the cost of obesity in areas of cancer deaths, lost work days, drug costs, doctor visits, and other related issues totals more than $117 billion.</p>
<p>It has been said that 70% or more of diseases are due to lifestyle, primarily inactivity. Other studies conclude that 90% of visits to primary physicians are due to stress-related disorders. Stress impacts individuals at every level, physical, mental, and emotional.  People under stress experience more physical, mental and emotional problems, develop unhealthy habits and lifestyle, are less satisfied with life and work, and are less productive. People suffering with chronic stress are generally less healthy than they otherwise could be.</p>
<p>The good news is that holistic wellness programs, those that impact all aspects of an individual’s life, can greatly improve these numbers. In fact, some have found that with a good health and wellbeing program, they see  28% less sick leave, 26% less healthcare costs, 30% reduction in Workplace Compensation costs, higher morale and stronger team dynamics.</p>

These <strong>leaders</strong> tend to have strengths in areas of decision making, big picture view, and return on investment. But unfortunately,  it is no secret that they are short on the interpersonal skills necessary to maintain employee engagement, retention, and collaborative team work. </p>
<p>These individuals tend to have a large ego and are often not coachable due to their belief that they are perfect and everybody else needs to change. Therefore these leaders, when they do bring in training programs, tend to focus on everybody else, and don’t attend trainings themselves, so they miss out on personal  <strong>leadership development,  </strong>the very thing that could make them a more <strong>effective leader </strong>in their organization.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have been asked what the connection is between <strong>productivity</strong> and personality training. Many companies these days are grasping for straws trying to find ways to <strong>increase productivity </strong>and decrease expenses, and they have difficulty understanding the ROI related to employee or <a title="Effective Teams" href="http://www.patswan.com/%pagetitle%">team training </a>in this area.  After all, it’s not directly related to technical skills or direct sales, they reason.</p>
<p>I see it this way. If you are going to chop down a tree, it’s best to sharpen your ax first. Otherwise you waste a lot of time, energy and expense, getting nowhere.</p>
<p>Whether your organization deals in products or services, the interpersonal skills of your employees and management<span style="text-decoration: underline;"> </span>can make or break your success. Understanding yourself, your world view and communication patterns, and communicating effectively with colleagues, customers and management, is directly linked to <strong>productivity</strong>. Here are a few ways that personality training impacts  <strong>workplace productivity </strong>in a positive way.</p>
<ul>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Morale:</span>  Employees who are involved in training activities have a higher view and buy in for company mission and ownership. They tend to develop greater company loyalty and trust. If the skills directly impact their ability to relate to <a title="Effective Teams" href="http://www.patswan.com/%pagetitle%">teammates </a>and fellow employees, they reap greater intrinsic rewards and this has an even greater impact on personal <strong>productivity</strong>.    </li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Employee engagement</span>: Studies have found that only about 20% of employees are actually engaged in the workplace. That leaves 80% either passively disengaged, actively disengaged or actually sabotaging company goals. Employees who are involved in workplace training that actually produces personal results and improves collaboration in the workplace improves employee engagement which has direct impact on <strong>improving productivity </strong>in the workplace.</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Retention:</span> It has been said by some Human Resource professionals  that individuals do not leave their job for the money, they leave due to manager dissatisfaction. Programs that help smooth interpersonal relationships and improve management skills do much to <strong>boost productivity </strong>and retain valuable employees<strong>.</strong></li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Workplace stress</span>: Stress is the buzz work of the day and many organizations talk a lot about stress reduction programs. Unfortunately many limit their goals to subsidizing wellness programs outside of the workplace. The fact is that interpersonal relationships both at work and at home are at the top of the stressor list for most people. Any program that helps individuals communicate more effectively, <a title="Conflict Resolution" href="http://www.patswan.com/%pagetitle%">resolve conflict </a>more smoothly, and understand different life views goes far in reducing stress on a day to day basis and in turn <strong>boosting productivity </strong>in the workplace.</li>

An employee who has a better understanding of individual differences, can relate with people different than themselves, and can understand different world views, motivations and needs, will be much better prepared to maintain customer loyalty when an issue arises.</li>

Whenever we improve the ability of groups to communicate more effectively and resolve differences peacefully and collaboratively, we will see a <strong>boost in team productivity</strong>. When unresolved conflict permeates a team, the group is immobilized and momentum stops.</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a title="Leadership Development" href="http://www.patswan.com/%pagetitle%">More effective leadership</a></span>: Many leaders have their skills in the area of decision making and money making and fall short in the area of people skills. This may work fine for them, but in an organization where leadership is seen as money motivated and uncaring, you see problems in all the above areas. <p>Different personalities have different world views and different communication styles. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One area that training in personality differences seems to make most sense is in the area of <strong>customer service</strong>.  When organizations incorporate this knowledge into their training programs we see a vast improvement in <strong>customer service </strong>and greater <strong>customer loyalty.</strong></p>
<p>Some personalities are just better at <strong>customer service </strong>than others. It helps to know which personality this is, and then to test for it.  These people care about people, know how to listen, and want to solve problems.  Their excellent listening and communication skills make  them better able to identify <strong>customer problems </strong>and to <a title="Conflict Resolution" href="http://www.patswan.com/%pagetitle%">find resolution</a>.  They don’t have a need to be right and are concerned with giving value to the customer.</p>
<p>The down side is that this personality dislikes <a title="Conflict Resolution" href="http://www.patswan.com/%pagetitle%">conflict </a>and may tend to avoid certain people and problems – they may push the complaint to the bottom of the pile due to anxiety revolved around facing  the person or confronting the issue.</p>
<p>The good news is that with proper knowledge and training these <strong>customer service </strong>personell have the best of both – they engender customer loyalty due to their excellent interpersonal skills, and they are able to resolve differences without making things worse.</p>
<p>The key of course is the ability of management to make right choices when hiring or placing individuals in <strong>customer service </strong>positions and then being willing to traing them to make the best use of their strengths while understanding how to compensate for their weaknesses.</p>
