Personality and Decision Making

If you are a busy manager, you are probably well aware of the fact that it would be helpful to keep up with changing corporate trends and to stay abreast of best practices in leadership and management. Like many though, you may be "too busy" just keeping up with daily requirements to take the time for necessary reading and/or training opportunities. Life just keeps getting in the way.

Perhaps you are one of the many busy executives or team members who feel constantly under the gun. Your success depends primarily on productivity. If you make that happen, you have "succeeded". If not, you, or your team, have failed!

If any of the above is true, beware! You may be tempted to just keep doing what you have always done, what comes naturally, thus getting what you have always gotten. Results may be less than stellar. Consider doing something different!

Interestingly, the solution you choose may have more to do with your basic personality than with which strategy will be most effective for a particular situation. And, individuals under stress unconsciously tend to resort to past patterns, rather than considering new ones.

As you know from your exposure to the PeoplemapTM System, different personality types have their own unique and very different ways of responding to life and solving problems. Each personality type has its own strengths, weaknesses and automatic responses. These traits also determine their daily decisions and their ultimate level of success. Your ability to understand varying perceptions and to gather options from all directions will help you make more effective decisions.

You, your employees, and/or teammates, can learn more about yourselves and others, and can develop more effective ways of communicating, solving everyday problems and reaching personal or professional goals. You can sharpen inborn strengths and learn methods to overcome weaknesses. Learn as much as you can about different personalities and varying communication patterns and apply your new insights.

Don't "just do" what you've always done, consider doing something different. Learn more about yourself and others. Put the skills you learn into practice. Be a manager or team member who inspires. It will definitely impact your life and your bottom line!

LEADER INTENTION

  • I am confident and I make quick decisions. This quality has helped me move forward and to not get bogged down at every turn.

  • At times though, I am so intent on making the decision that I believe is "right", that I do not fully listen to the ideas and opinions of others.

  • Now, I realize I can gain valuable information from other individuals who are different than I am.

  • Today, I intend to be more open and responsive to the input of my family members and others I am in contact with.

PEOPLE INTENTION

  • I value loyalty. I am always there for my friends.

  • Sometimes, I spend so much time helping friends, that I may neglect myself or my family. It seems that I am always the one who comes to the rescue and my energy is depleted. I become irritable.

  • I realize I don't have to be all things to all people. I am not a "bad" friend if I admit I have other plans or make my own needs a priority. When I become resentful, I endanger the relationship.

  • Today, I intend to re-examine where I allow my energy to go. I will listen to myself and allocate my energy in the appropriate places, at the appropriate times.

FREE SPIRIT INTENTION

  • I have never worried too much about important papers, filing, or other organizational processes. It seems kind of "anal" to me.

  • Sometimes I need to get hold of personal records such as insurance, credit card information, medical and other, and I don't know where they are.

  • Now, I realize that maintaining important papers is essential and this is something I need to learn how to do whether I want to or not. Losing important papers can cause all kinds of problems for me in the future.

  • Today, I intend to gather together all of my important personal papers, determine a method of organization and purchase the necessary filing system. Today, I intend to organize my personal documents.

TASK INTENTION

  • I think I am fairly rational in my thinking and prefer to deal with facts rather than feelings. Feelings seem so subjective and make me uncomfortable. Facts are concrete, black and white.

  • Sometimes this gets in the way of my personal and professional relationships. My family members sometimes say I just "don't understand". At work, team members seem to avoid sharing information with me.

  • Now I realize that soft people skills and emotions are not my strengths. In fact, I would benefit from a few learned strengths in that area.

  • Today, I will practice listening to feelings and thoughts that are not necessarily fact. I will appreciate emotional depth in others and try to strengthen my empathy. I intend to develop my interpersonal skills.
