Message from Pat Swan

Dear Reader,

A funny thing happened on the way to finishing up my newsletter last month. . .the newsletter was somehow broadcast before I finished! Lucky for all of you, because you got an early and colorful look at my upcoming inspirational book for change, which I was considering as my header at the time. But, I have decided to use the above format, which more closely resembles my website. As always, comments welcome. Who knows, being a Free Spirit, I might just change my mind again!

Cheers,
Pat

P.S. Intentions, the book, is now available at www.patswan.com/products.html. Check it out!

Intent (In tent') 1. Firmly directed; earnest. 2. Having one's attention or purpose firmly fixed.

Intention (in ten' shen) 1. determination to act in a specific way.

LEADER INTENTION

  • I am determined to be successful at everything I do. Success motivates me. I admire power, prestige and status.

  • Sometimes it is important for individuals to re-define "success" for themselves. Is success having the things money can buy or is success having the things that money canā??t buy?

  • Now I know there are different types of personalities with different perspectives and different motivations.

  • Today I intend to re-evaluate my definition of success. Today I will focus on developing and nurturing the things most important to me.

PEOPLE INTENTION

  • I am glad that I am a good listener. Friends and coworkers come to me with their problems because they know I will listen with care and concern.

  • I realize now that I donā??t always listen to myself. Sometimes, I want to say something or disagree with an opinion, but I say nothing. Sometimes, I donā??t have time to listen, but I do anyway. Then I begin to feel resentful.

  • Now I know I must begin to listen to myself too. I must decide whether and when to listen to others. My time is valuable.

  • Today I intend to begin to listen to myself. I intend to set time aside to listen to my feelings and opinions. I may have to limit time I spend listening to other peopleā??s problems in order to make time for my own.

FREE SPIRIT INTENTION

  • I am independent and believe I am competent and creative. I enjoy being on my own.

  • Sometimes I resent when managers or teammates micromanage my affairs. I think, "Donā??t they know I am perfectly capable of doing this without their input?"

  • Now I realize it is not necessarily personal. Different types of people need to know exactly what is going on and do not like to feel they are "in the dark".

  • Today I intend to respect the needs of others as well as my own. I will supply needed information and details. I know this will help me grow also. I intend to develop my capacity for process, plans and details.

TASK INTENTION

  • I actually like details and enjoy pulling together loose ends. It feels good when I can make order out of chaos.

  • I sometimes get upset when others do not focus on details or value the hard work I put into getting all the relevant facts.

  • Now I realize that getting the facts and putting together a detailed report or project, is what I do best. But others do not necessarily value that.

  • Today I intend to do what I do best ā?? get the facts and put them together in a concrete plan or project. I will not worry about what others focus on. I intend to value every personā??s input.
